Chapter 24

It didn’t take long at all. Even the threats from his probation officer to get a job didn’t scare him. All Willis wanted to do was lay around watching television, drinking, smoking cigarettes; all things that he could not buy. Telling me what to stop and pick up for him on my way home from work. It didn’t take long for my apartment to start smelling like funky tail and sour feet. It took everything I had to keep coming up with lies to keep his horny butt off of me. I just didn’t feel him like that anymore; my feelings for him were dead. Being locked up in prison for almost two years put about forty pounds on him, and it all located to his stomach. It wasn’t long before the alcohol no longer satisfied his cravings. He wanted a better high. He needed something more. He started going out at night, coming home drunk and high at one, two, three o’clock in the morning, it didn‘t matter. He would make so much noise, waking me up, knowing full well that I had to get up at five thirty.

“Hey Baby,” he came in one morning yelling at the top of his lungs. “I’m hungry, get up and fix me something to eat.” He came and flopped his musty behind next to me on my clean sheets.

“Come on, baby, fix me something to eat,” he jabbed me with his elbow.

“Willis, you know I have to go to work in the morning. Leave me alone,” I growled.

“But I’m hungry!” he yelled at the top of his lungs.

I rolled over and stared at him with the help of the moonlight that came through my window. I stared at him long and hard while he lay next to me like a big baby. The more I stared, the more I disliked him. He was literally making me sick. I grabbed my pillow and went out to the living room to sleep on the couch. As soon as I was just about to drift away to slumber, there he went into the kitchen making all sorts of noise with my pots and pans, cussing and ranting.

“It’s a dog-gone shame when a woman won’t cook for her husband,” I heard him say as he opened and slammed the refrigerator door. I put the pillow over my head.

“Hell, I’m as hungry as a workhorse and you don’t even care. You don’t care about me no more,” he raised his voice. “Hell, if it was up to you, I would still be rotting away in some prison.” He slammed a pot on the stove. I put my hands over my ears just enough to hear him and not understand what he was saying. He was really pissing me off. I tried my best to go back to sleep.

Once again I was right there on the verge of drifting off when the smoke alarm went off. Startled, I jumped up from the couch to find Willis asleep at the table and a pot on fire atop the stove.
